Bed-Stuy on the Move /New York
June 2003Bedford-Stuyvesant aka Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn (New York) was once known as the largest ghetto in the US. It is now a fast gentrifying area, with an amazing stock of brownstone houses, a rich culture and a local economy, full of potential.
This essay, written in 2003 as part of a masters in urban planning at Columbia University, explores the role of the informal sector and demographic changes accompanying the rise of the neighborhood. It argues for an integrated development strategy for Bed-Stuy that takes into account its cultural history and the entrepreneuship immigrants.
