Urban Typhoon Shimokitazawa /Tokyo

June 2006

130 participants from Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, Japan and abroad worked in small multidisciplinary and multicultural teams to produce a testimony to the spirit of Shimokitazawa and brainstorm on its future in the face of a redevelopment plan of the Government.

Shimokitazawa is a neighborhood of Tokyo’s Setegaya Ward where about 20,000 people live, a significant portion of whom are in their 20’s and 30’s. The 500-meter radius around the Shimokitazawa station is a well-known cultural, social and commercial hub popular with the young adults for its hundreds of specialty shops, bars and restaurants, lively night scene and creative and relaxed atmosphere. The Municipality of Setagaya plans a large road that will cut through the Northern part of the neighborhood. Community groups such as Save the Shimokitazawa and Shimokitazawa are opposing the plan and proposing alternatives.
